Release the Alt key. The accent will appear over the letter, as shown here. Learning the numbers for accents may require some practice since there are some of them. You can make a cheat sheet and keep it with your computer, so you can quickly get back to it if you have to put accent marks again and again. If you need regular accents, you should change your keyboard to suit your needs.
1. Use keyboard shortcuts to set accents when writing to a Mac. This method works for documents created in pages, as well as on the Internet. The dial key is always pressed first and then you enter a combination of two other keys to put an accent on a letter.
2. Press the + button and then the letter to make a gravis. Hold down the Option key, then press the `(Accent) key. Release the buttons. You'll see a marked yellow accent on your side. Then press the letter over which the accent should be placed. This can be done with any vowel.
3. Press the + E key and then the letter to set an acute. Press and hold the selection key and then press the E key. Release the buttons. If the yellow marked acute appears, you can select the letter. This accent can be set over any vowel.
4. Press the + I dial and then the letter to set a circumflex. Hold down the selector and then press I. Release the buttons. Then select the desired letter. This accent can also be used over every vowel.
5. Press the + N key and then the letter to make a tilde. Hold down the Option key, then press the N key. Release the buttons. Then select the desired letter. This accent can only be used with letters A, N and O.
6. Press the + U key and then the letter to make an umlaut. Hold down the Option key and then click the U. Release the keys. Now you can select the desired letter.
7. Press the Shift key to highlight uppercase letters with an accent. You must first press the Shift key to make the letters large. Typically, they will automatically become uppercase when they are at the beginning of a sentence.
