Nowadays you can do digital photos not only with a digital camera, but also with mobile devices. Find the pictures on your phone, camera or external device and save them to your PC using different methods. You can also save images from a CD, DVD, web page, or e-mail on a PC with Microsoft Windows 7, 8, or Vista .

Import from a phone, camera, or external drive

1. Connect your device. Use the supplied data cable of your phone, external drive or camera. IPhones from Apple have a lightning port, while other phones have a mini-USB cable. Plug the cable into a USB port on your computer.
  • Your operating system should recognize your phone as a digital camera. The DCIM (Digital Camera Images) folder should be displayed when your camera is plugged in. This is the default folder in your phone where all your photos are saved. Your computer will also recognize this folder on a real digital camera. Maybe you need to search for available folders when you insert an external drive. You should know in which folder you have saved your pictures.
  • Make sure iTunes is closed on your computer when you use an iPhone.

2. Open My Computer. Click on the DCIM or picture folder to see all your pictures on your computer. Even if you do not have your normal photo app or software, you can still view your photos in this folder.

3. Use the right mouse button to click on the pictures you want to save. Use the mouse to highlight all images you want to back up. Right-click on the drop-down menu and use the left mouse button to import. Your pictures will be stored in your folder on your computer in a subfolder, which you can name as you wish.
  • If you look at a single image in full screen mode, "Import" might not be available on a right click. Search on your PC for the device. You can also select all photos in the DCIM folder by clicking "Select All" from the drop-down menu after clicking the folder with the right mouse button.

4. Use an SD or Micro SD card. Some cameras or phones use a micro SD or SD card to store. These behave like a normal flash drive as soon as they are connected to your computer. Just take them out of your device and slide them into the right slot on your computer. The device will appear on your computer when it is inserted. Open the right picture folder and right-click on the pictures you want to save on your computer.
  • While the iPhone does not support SD or micro SD card, these do include phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Note 4 and Sony Xperia. It may be that you need to buy a micro SD card reader for your computer if it does not have the right slot. Most computers have one, but it may be that you still need to buy an adapter from micro SD to SD to fit the small car

5. Drag & Drop. When you insert a storage device like a flash drive, a phone or a camera, you can simply drag and drop the image files from the SD or Micro SD folder, the DCIM folder, or the storage folder to the desktop of your computer pull. Just click on the picture with the mouse, drag it from the folder to your desktop and the image is saved.

6. Use backup and synchronization services. Choose from various services and apps on the Internet, including Microsoft OneDrive for Windows Phones, iPhones, or Android phones. Go to Settings on your phone and turn on camera backup. The app will automatically upload images you've stored on your phone to your OneDrive account. You can then access your pictures from your computer via WLAN or an Internet connection.
  • Other apps and services include Dropbox and Carousel. It may be that you need to download an app, as is the case with the dropbox, to access your photos. It may also be that you have to pay to increase the amount of pictures you can save.
  • Flickr, Google Photos and iCloud Photo Library also offer an exclusive online store. The prices and functionality vary depending on your storage needs. Find out which option is best for your needs.
