Regardless of whether you are writing in a foreign language or in your own language, knowing how to get accent marks can significantly speed up typing. There are several ways to set accents, depending on which program you are using, and this article presents a few of the most common approaches.
Note: This article assumes that you are working with an English keyboard. If you use a keyboard for a different language, it may be that the necessary accents are already available.
1. Learn first to distinguish the accents. You always have to pay attention to the right accent, since an accent may give a completely different meaning to a word. These are some of the most common accents applied in most European languages:
Gravis - à, è, ì, ò, ù
Akut - á, é, í, ó, ú, ý
Zircumflex - â, ê, î, ô, û
Tilde - ñ, õ, ã
Umlaut - ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ
2. Find an example of the required letter or word. You can use text from an existing text file, from the drawing table, or via an Internet search. If you are looking for a word on a search engine that usually has an accent, you should be able to quickly find the entire word and copy it.
3. Select the required letter or word. Press the right mouse button to copy the text. Press the Command + C to copy it when you are using a Mac.
4. Add single accents to your text. If you are using a Mac, you can select "Fit and Style" by pressing the right mouse button if you want the accent or the accented word to match the rest of the text. If you are using a PC, mark the word after inserting it and change the font so that it fits the rest of the document. If you rarely use accents or just look for a fast solution, this can be the most appropriate method for you to quickly set accents.
